"The Word," depicts a dystopian world, where the written word is replaced with hieroglyphs & the spoken with sign language.
Words were deemed problematic, so they are abolished. It asks the reader to imagine a world without words. To consider how stagnant & stale such a world is destined to be.
Ancient Chinese proverb says, "May you live in interesting times."

Current year is interesting times.
"The Word," asks the reader to consider, how would you feel if your right to use words was taken from you?
